THE ISLAND
The performance
Eight people find themselves on an uninhabited island. The reasons for their presence vary: some have survived a shipwreck, others have fled from war, and some have escaped the pace of life and challenges they couldn’t overcome.
They have nowhere to return to, and adapting to the given conditions is difficult. The uncertainty they face stirs various questions and emotions within them. The dance piece “The Island” explores the theme of human migration, but without a specific political context one might expect. There are no references to where the story takes place, which part of the world, what time period, or which nation these people belong to. The confusion and discomfort the characters initially experience on the island can lead to unexpectedly positive outcomes. This is the main dramaturgical and conceptual line of the piece: migration isn’t necessarily just about hardship and loss, leaving something behind, or accepting something new and different. It can also be about discovering new values and building a better and more beautiful life.
Thus, the island doesn’t have to symbolize isolation and loneliness but can become a place for finding a different pace and perspective on life, establishing distance from the things that burden or sadden us. It represents a symbolic, perhaps utopian, place of serenity that we all strive for.
