The Writer premieres in Stamsund

On the 5th of June, Jo Strømgren Kompani premieres the newest show at The Stamsund International Theatre Festival in Lofoten, Norway, in co-production with Ulrike Quade (NL) and Nordland Visual Theatre (N). THE WRITER is a performance about the life and work of the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun (1859 – 1952).

Hamsun is portrayed by three different puppets that represent three decisive moments in Hamsun’s life: when he is thirty and has a breakthrough with his novel Hunger, around the age of sixty when he receives the Nobel Prize for Literature, and aged ninety when his last novel On Overgrown Paths is published. Strømgren and Quade bring the writer to life as they search for the significance of his work in the here and now. They do so in Hamsun’s own writing style, with fleeting snapshots, flashbacks and memories of the various stages of his long life, in which he gives a critical, philosophical and moralising commentary on the people around him.

After its premiere in Stamsund, THE WRITER will travel to Porsgrunn International Theatre Festival and The Festival of North Norway.
In the fall of 2009 the show will tour in Europe and have an extensive tour in the Netherlands before ending with a two week run at Centralteatret in Oslo, Norway. Check out our schedule for further updates and read more about the production here
