The first rehearsal
of Jo Strømgren’s
debut as a theatre
director went all right.
It also proved the
director to be quite
an actor himself.
He was able to hide
the fact that he was
not at all competent
for the job. In midst
the readings, he
suddenly came up
with the idea that
it probably would
be good to drop some
quotations here and
there, just to simulate
a knowledge of
theatre history.
One can say there
was a moment of
doubt and hesitation
among the actors
when the fresh theatre
director exclaimed:
“And as Stanislavsky
said: GO FOR IT!”
The production became
a success however, and
the director himself
went into a period of
serious reading and
studying before next
engagement. The first
book on the list was
the one of Stanislavsky.
